“Great art is clear thinking about mixed feelings.”
Celebrated film director Mike Nichols said this on Sunday while lauding playwright and MacDowell Medal winner Edward Albee at the MacDowell Colony’s annual Medal Day. There was a murmur around me as he said these words, spectators and artists looking at each other and nodding…the statement felt right on the tongue and in the heart.
And I thought: That’s true about conflict resolution, too. Great conflict resolution is clear thinking about mixed feelings.
I so appreciate Nichols giving us another way to think about the art of conflict resolution.
Odds and Ends
Conflict Zen readers who are project managers: The August 2011 issue of the Project Management Institute’s PM Network magazine includes an article for which I was interviewed about the importance and messiness of collaboration.
Quick quote:
“Collaboration is messy. It requires the right amount of space for people to make mistakes and for the organization to be forgiving of those mistakes.” You can find the article, “Team Spirit,” on page 56.
Conflict Zen readers who are dispute resolution professionals: I’ll be participating in a new monthly Twitter chat about ADR organized by Jeff Thompson of ADRhub and Jason Dykstra of Absolution Mediation. The chat will take place at 8 pm Eastern Time on the last Wednesday of every month beginning August 31. We’ll be using the hashtag #ADRhubChat and I hope you’ll join the conversation.
Not sure what a hashtag is or how to join the conversation on Twitter? Read this: How to Join a Twitter Hashtag Chat.

Great quote and congrats on your interview. Your Odds and Ends were really helpful
Thanks, Pep!
