Do you have a favorite section or two from a mediation book and want to copy and distribute it for your trainings without violating copyright law? Or want to reprint or excerpt another blogger’s online article and wonder whether doing so falls under fair use?
Then I’ve got two resources you should bookmark for future use:
- Get copyright permissions the easy peasy way we academics have known about for years (and you don’t need to be a prof to use the service). When I’m doing a training and want to use portions of a book or journal article, I turn to the Copyright Clearance Center, an online service for checking on, requesting, and obtaining copyright permissions for a small fee per-use fee or annual license (which I just build into my training fee).
- In addition to CCC’s online information about fair use, I also like American University’s Center for Social Media, which has resources for understanding fair use in print and digital media, including video.

Hi Tammy ,
Thank you for your tip to go to copyright clearence center. This has come at a perfect time for me .I hope to train of solicitors in mediation the coming year , hopefully here( Ireland ) and in England.
I was a bit worried about using articles or chapters in books and not certain where to get permission.
This has aleviated one of my headaches .
I love your site and your generous inclusive approach to everyone
Regards,
Julie
